July 2010
Our Club member Ryan Cabanizas came in 3rd in 1 – 2 dan division in Leeward Oahu Tournament on June 20th. Many who practice with me in my club, Mililani, Waipahu Konko Kyo did well.
I do not have the result of Dan examination on June 27th. However, Dr. Tamashiro announced at Tuesday, June 29th practice, that Konko Kyo Kendo Club member Keoni Rivers passed 1 dan.
In Pacific Northwest Kendo Federation Women’s Tournament was a success. Hawaii Team consisted of Michelle Ham, Audry Hayase, Rina Ono, Lucia Chung and Shelly Ichishita did well enough to be one of the eight best teams. Their quarterfinal match was 1 – 1 win tie but lost with one point difference. They had a good time in Seattle and found friends and renewed friendship.
We had a honor to have Hanshi 8 dan Miyagawa Hidetoshi Sensei and Kyoshi 7 dan Inoue Kazuyoshi Sensei with us in Hawaii in June. Mr. Miyagawa told us at Kaimuki practice on Sunday, June 13th that we should not wait and do even keiko with higher rank senseis. We should keep on trying your best to strike senseis. You will be countered by higher rank senseis. That is where your learning starts.
Kenkyu Kai practice is on Friday, July 2nd at JCCH dojo from 7:30PM. Mr. Carl Nakamura has informed us that we will study the way of refereeing.
Sunday, July 4th, is Independence Day Holiday. But Kaimuki Gym will be open. We do have our weekly Honbu dojo practice there. Come and practice.
Liz Dutton and Sue Lytollis of New Zealand, both 5 dan, will be in town from July 13th through 20th. They plan to be at Kenshikan Dojo practice on Tuesday, July 13th.
Kenshikan Dojo has announced that they will host a tournament on Saturday, August 7th.
Mark your calendar and participate.
Late Konishi Toshihiro Sensei wanted me to pass 7 dan examination as quick as possible. He frequently gave me advises. He gave me same advises repeatedly. I was ashamed of myself because I could not correct my bad habits though I was always aware and conscious about them. I see same things among some of you. I give advises but the same things continue. Some of those things are not like my bad habits, can be easily corrected. I get discouraged and feel like no longer saying to the persons who cannot correct even easy things.
